* Presentation by Coach Horl

“The inaugural winner of the Sergio DiBenedetto Memorial Scholarship has been a SSHS starter for the varsity football team. After playing offensive and defensive line positions, this athlete was asked to move into the middle linebacker position for the team’s quarterfinal game against Roosevelt in his senior year. Although never playing this position, he readily agreed to do what was best for the team and quite possible had his greatest impact in a game all season and was a huge page of the team’s victory that day. This young man not only excels on the football field, but he graduated with IB diploma credits and has maintained over a 92 grade point average. He was also heavily involved in the arts, each year performing in the Theatre Club’s musicals, student directed plays, and a variety of singing and guitar competitions. We wish him luck next year as he continues his education at Temple University.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS YEAR’S SERGIO DIBENEDETTO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP WINNER, MR. JAMES HATTER.”

* The Sergio DiBenedetto Memorial Scholarship offers financial support to students at South Side High School seeking a college education who have displayed an outstanding commitment to service and academics while demonstrating passion in their pursuits. Funded by the Mini 3 Ice Cream of Reliance Hose of the Rockville Centre Fire Dept., the scholarship will support students who exemplify the same kind and giving spirit Sergio exhibited throughout his life. Sergio DiBenedetto, a South Side graduate, showed incredible promise as a student, athlete, and philanthropist during his high school tenure and beyond. He was a four year football player and an active member of the Rockville Centre Fire Department. Sergio was a devoted husband, father, and community member. Yet unfortunately, he was taken from us too soon, passing away in 2017 from cancer at the young age of 38. Mini 3 Ice Cream was founded based on the generosity of his parents, Butch & Roe CiBenedetto, in order to raise funds for Reliance Hose 3 and this Scholarship year after year. We sincerely hope that this Memorial Scholarship will continue to recognize Sergio’s legacy and make his spirit known to generations to come.
